One mother. Two daughters. One favorite. One not.

When Cassie Barclay is presented with an opportunity – or is it a curse – she jumps at the chance. She takes on a new life, her sister’s life, and although at first, it holds appeal and promise, she soon realizes sometimes the fairy tale is tainted.

Assuming the name of Tessa, Cassie moves into the life that was her sister’s, and faces first one realization then another, one disappointment after another. Stepping into Connie’s life does not automatically grant her all that Connie had or was.

But it does deny all that she had and was as Cassie. As herself.

Tessa Unsavory Heritage Book 1 eBook Robin E Mason

Children who have lived in an atmosphere of never measuring up to a sibling will laugh, cry, and reflect upon their own understanding as they follow three generations of women. The guilt of secrets long kept hidden and the revelations of family yet unknown draw the women together and create a suspenseful story full of doubt and the hope for the life all of us wish for. Cassie Barclay grew up as the embarrassing product of young love. Three generations of women born on Christmas Day are both drawn to each other and torn apart by pride and circumstance. For any child who dreamed of the same acceptance and love others find so freely, this is a book that will bring acceptance and healing. The characters were thoroughly engaging and the story will keep you engaged from beginning to end. There were some instances where too many inconsequential characters were described in detail, but that did not detract from the overall beauty of the story or the message of love and hope that are delightfully interwoven with years of secrets and longing.

Tessa Unsavory Heritage Book 1 eBook Robin E Mason Reviews

The style of writing, the storyline and the characters all had my eyes hungry for more. I couldn't put Tessa down! My new fav! I recommend Tessa to all those who like to read a book that's 'life like'. Hey, what happen to Tessa could happen to any of us. But you'll have to read the book to find out what ;). Enjoy!
It's cruel to give such a tantalizing taste, when I have to wait for the entire wonderful meal. Right out of the gate, there's mystery enough to really make me want to keep going and going. I am looking forward to settling in for a great read. And I know to never ever run out of coffee! Kudos to Robin E. Mason!
Promises to be a suspenseful, reading delight! Look forward to getting a full taste of it and finding out what happens to Tessa and who the mystery caller is!
This was an exciting thriller as to the deception of one sister towards the other. The author lives near me and I read the manuscript prior to the publishing of the book.
The only reason I am giving this book only 3 stars is because although it has a very good story line and is very well written it has too much of everything else. Too many characters that are difficult to keep track of, too many details and descriptions and way too many goings back and forth in time. I had to stop reading several times in order to keep my thinking straight which made it difficult for me to advance at my usual pace when reading a good book.
I'm a guy, and romance novels are not the genre I read. But having become acquainted with Robin E. Mason on Facebook, and reading her genuine and often humorous posts, I wanted to read this book. She obviously did extensive research into the arts, and the places described in the book. The dilemma face by the three generations of women over choices made, and consequences endured made for an interesting story. The second half of the book picked up the pace and hooked me into the "what's going to happen?" mode. I admire the work that Mason has produced.
Cassie Barclay grew up being showered with love and affection from everyone but her mother. Thinking it was just her mother’s way, she accepted it. But when she was ten, her mother’s cool behavior towards her catapulted to that of indifference when her baby sister, Connie, came along. Choosing not to vocalize her hurt, Cassie lives a solitary existence always in the shadow of Connie.

When the time comes for Cassie to go to college, she gladly leaves home determined to make her life her own. But it isn’t long before temptation comes calling and she soon discovers that she has fallen into the same trap her mother had years before. Not wanting to do to her own daughter, what her mother had done to her, a sacrifice is made.

Years pass, guilt is hidden, and secrets are kept. Then one day, a terrible tragedy threatens to undo her very existence, but this travesty is quickly perceived as a sly opportunity and these secrets turn to lies. Cassie quickly adapts to her new life and absorbs it like a thirsty sponge. She soon meets and marries the man of her dreams and for the first time finds peace. Her closely guarded secret however, comes to fruition for a blackmailer who is seeking his own opportunity. Three generations of women are then forced to confront one another bringing the story full circle.

This is a great book that explores the damage that favoritism can cause upon the other child. And the fact that Marnie, Cassie’s mother, knowingly does this makes the act all the more sorrowful.

The author does a good job of making Cassie, Marnie, and a whole host of other characters jump off the page. I found myself feeling for Cassie, and rooting for her to have a happy ending.

The story, while rich in description and backstory, does have a tendency to be a little too descriptive at certain points, which at times I felt interrupted the flow, but it didn’t stop me from enjoying it. All in all a great read.
